his trip is what I call a twofer: two for the price of one. I love doing something that has more than one benefit.

Question: Where is the easternmost point of the United States?

Answer: West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec, Maine!

I love doing something that has more than one benefit. In this case, seeing a beautiful lighthouse AND witnessing a sunrise at the easternmost part of the United States was a perfect two-fer. It was time for another road trip! My sidekick on this adventure was our 15 year old daughter, Ana.

The state of Maine is beautiful. And, the coast is especially so. Half of our road trip traveled over Route 9 and Route 1--the heart of “Down East” Maine. If you are traveling with two licensed drivers, try to convince your partner to take the steering wheel during this section of the drive and promise to drive on the way back. That way, each of you can look at all of the many small towns that look like they would have 50 years ago.

The sign welcoming us to Lubec, Maine displays both the Canadian and US flag, and for a good reason. You can literally see Canada as you walk along Water and South Water Street. In fact, the US Customs and Border Control is right next to the Lubec post office. Be sure to bring your passport if you want to make a quick visit into Canada for a meal!

Main Street in Lubec is not where the most scenic views can be found. As I previously mentioned, Water and South Water Street offer your best views in addition to an ice cream stand and gift shops.

You can walk from one end of Water Street to the other in less than a half hour by walking very slowly…and you should walk slowly. There are lots of interesting building, nooks and crannies that you will not notice if you walk too fast or drive.

If you happen to visit during low tide, be sure to walk to the shore’s edge and scavenge for pretty stones, sea glass and small sea creatures that were stranded.

Take it slow and notice the little things.

I found that a full day in Lubec, including our welcoming the new day at the lighthouse, felt like the right amount of time for us. If you want to splurge, stay at the West Quoddy Station, which is one mile down the road from the lighthouse.

If you want to splurge, stay at the West Quoddy Station, which is one mile down the road from the lighthouse. It’s a little pricey, but it’s worth it given how close it is to both the lighthouse, downtown Lubec and Canada.

There are a couple of easy hiking paths off to the side that have beautiful views of the ocean. I highly recommend a trip to Lubec, Maine.
